Gurcan to Chair Workshop in Chicago

Dr. Metin Gurcan  will be chairing the Histopathology Image Analysis ( HIMA ) workshop in Chicago, Ill on October 6, 2012 as part of the Pathology Informatics Meeting . HIMA is a series of meetings and workshops organized to advance the field of histopathological image analysis. This workshop aims to bring together clinicians, computer scientists and industrial vendors of digital pathology equipment to discuss clinical challenges and open problems, and present the state-of-the-art research in quantitative image analysis and visualization methods for digital pathology, diagnosis, and prognosis from H&E and IHC stained, multi-parametric imaging. This is the third time that this workshop is organized as part of the Pathology Informatics conference. This year it is going to feature six keynote speakers from both Europe and the USA.

Gurcan to Chair Workshop in Nice, France

Dr. Gurcan will be chairing the Histopathology Image Analysis (HIMA):Image Computing in Digital Pathology workshop in Nice, France on October 5, 2012. HIMA is a series of meetings and workshops organized toadvance the field of histopathological image analysis. This is the third time that this meeting is organized as part of the MICCAI conference. MICCAI is one of the largest conferences attended by the world’s leading scientists, engineers and clinicians. The HIMA workshop this year is going to feature three keynote speakers in addition to oral and poster sessions. Four student presenters received travel awards to attend this workshop. European PhD students visiting CIALAB

Onur Yorulmaz and Alexander Suhre have joined the CIA Lab from June to August 2011. Both of them are graduate students from Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey under the supervision of Dr. A. Enis Cetin. Their visit is funded by the EC as part of the MIRACLE project. Onur will be studying possible application areas of grouplets to microscopic images. Alexander will apply some image classification algorithms that were developed in his previous research to follicular lymphoma image data.

New Computer-aided Follicular Lymphoma Image Analysis Research Publications

Two papers from the CIALAB have been accepted for publication in the IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging and Computerized Medical Imaging and Graphics. The abstracts are below. Partitioning Histopathological Images: An Integrated Framework for Supervised Color-Texture Segmentation and Cell Splitting Kong, H.; Gurcan, M.; Belkacem- Boussaid, K.; ABSTRACT For quantitative analysis of histopathological images, such as the lymphoma grading systems, quantification of features is usually carried out on single cells before categorizing them by classification algorithms. To this end, we propose an integrated framework consisting of a novel supervised cell-image segmentation algorithm and a new touching-cell splitting method. For the segmentation part, we segment the cell regions from the other areas by classifying the image pixels into either cell or extra-cellular category. Instead of using pixel color intensities, the color-texture extracted at the local neighborhood of each pixel i...

Barriers and facilitators to adoption of soft copy interpretation from the user perspective: Lessons learned from filmless radiology for slideless pathology Emily S Patterson 1 , Mike Rayo 1 , Carolina Gill 2 , Metin N Gurcan 3 1 Division of Health Information Management and Systems, School of Allied Medical Professions, College of Medicine, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH 43210, USA 2 Department of Industrial, Interior and Visual Communication Design, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH 43210, USA 3 Department of Biomedical Informatics, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH 43210, USA Background: Adoption of digital images for pathological specimens has been slower than adoption of digital images in radiology, despite a number of anticipated advantages for digital images in pathology. In this paper, we explore the factors that might explain this slower rate of adoption. Materials and Method: Semi-structured interviews on barriers and facilitators to ...
