DRS. NIAZI AND AKAKIN TO PRESENT AT SPIE CONFERENCE IN ORLANDO, FL IN FEBRUARY, 2015

Drs.   Niazi and Akakin are planned to present at the SPIE Digital Pathology Conference in February in Orlando, FL. Dr. Gurcan will chair the conference. Dr. Akakin will present the paper “An Adaptive Algorithm for Detection of Multiple-Type, Positively Stained Nuclei in IHC images with minimal Prior Information: Application to OLIG2 Staining Glioms” in which she will discuss the method of segmentation of oligodendrocytes and gliomas in OLIG2 immunoperoxidase stained tissue sections. This project is in collaboration with Drs. Otero and Gokozan of OSU Pathology Department. Dr. Niazi will present the paper, “Characterizing primary refractory neuroblastoma: Prediction of outcome by microscopic image analysis” which involves developing pre-treatment clinic-biological biomarkers that can guide precise and effective therapeutic strategies to neuroblastoma. Welcome Dr. Fazly Abas

The CIA Lab is proud to add the newest member to our lab, Dr. Fazly Salleh Abas. Dr. Fazly Salleh Abas received his B.Eng degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from Strathclyde University, Scotland in 1999 and Ph.D in Electronics and Computer Science from University of Southampton, England in 2004 where he worked on a project involving content-based analysis and retrieval of craquelure (crack) patterns. He has been a faculty member at the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Multimedia University, Malaysia since 1999 and is currently a visiting scholar at the Department of Biomedical Informatics, Ohio State University. His current research interests are in image/video processing, pattern recognition, biomedical informatics, motion analysis for sports and rehabilitation applications as well as having certain degree of involvement in biometrics research.

Dr. Gurcan to Present in Sweden

Dr. Gurcan to present in Sweden November 6, 2014 in Linköping, Sweden November 7, 2014 in Uppsala, Sweden In a couple of weeks, Dr. Gurcan will be traveling to Sweden to speak at 2nd Nordic Digital Pathology Symposium 2014 in Linköping, Sweden followed by the CIM Workshop on Mathematics and Medicine in Uppsala, Sweden. On November 6th, he will give a keynote talk entitled “Clinical Image Analysis: Closing the Loop.” On November 7th, he will present “Clinical Image Analysis: Affecting Decisions” as an invited speaker. Both talks will include advantages of using computer-image analysis systems in radiology and pathology and the importance of proper assessment methods with examples from the lab’s projects. Dr. Gurcan to Present OSU Neurology Ground Rounds

Dr. Gurcan to Present OSU Neurology Ground Rounds Dr. Gurcan is going to present the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Neurology Ground Rounds talk. His talk of "Histopathological Image Analysis: Now and Future” will feature the current status of histopathological image analysis, descriptions of how the current medical practice can benefit from computerized image analysis, and discussion of the new trends in this rapidly growing field. Aashish Katapadi Awarded Choose Ohio First – Bioinformatics Scholarship

Congratulations to our very own Aashish Katapadi for being  a continued recipient of the Choose Ohio First – Bioinformatics Scholarship for the 2014 academic year! As a recipient, he must adhere to the following: 1.  Continued academic progress and maintaining at least a 3.0 GPA 2.  A progress reporting activities to fulfill as part of the agreement to participate and receive these funds for the academic year 3.  To present personal research at least once each year as a part of the scholarship activities. 

New Undergraduate Student Research Assistants

We are pleased to welcome our newest undergraduate student research assistants to the team. Jimmy Chau  is an incoming third-year Biomedical Engineering undergraduate student at The Ohio State University, expecting to graduate in 2016. At the moment, he is pursuing entrance into medical school and continuing his education in graduate school for biomedical informatics and will make a decision between the two by the end of his third year. In his free time, he enjoys playing ultimate frisbee and spending time in nature. Quynh Vo is a current second-year Chemistry undergraduate student at The Ohio State University, expecting to graduate in 2017. She is currently working on a minor in Global Public Health as well as on a Pre-Med track, hoping to pursue a career in Radiology. In her free time, she enjoys playing all sports including soccer, basketball, football, softball, and sand volleyball. New Hotspot Detection Method Developed in CIA Lab

CIA Lab Researchers, in collaboration with the Department of Pathology at Ohio State University have developed a new method to segment Ki-67 positive nuclei and determine hotspots in the neuroendocrine tumour slide images.  The publication, “Perceptual clustering for automatic hotspot detection from Ki-67 stained neuroendocrine tumour images” by Niazi, Yearsley, Zhou, Frankel, and Gurcan will be published in Journal of Microscopy . The methodology can be seen below. This new method attempts to mimic the thought process of a pathologist. It was tested and had an accuracy of 94.60%. This methodology can also be applied to other disease studies in the future.
